I love a classic American Cheese Grilled Cheese as much as any one. But when you want to elevate to the next level, this combination of sourdough with gruyere, provolone, and cheddar is a terrific combination that truly hits the mark.
Prep Steps
- 1 tbsp butter, at room temperature {do:soften}
Garlic Butter
In a small bowl, mix together...
- 1 tbsp butter, softened
- 1/8 tsp garlic powder
Spread the garlic butter on one side of each of...
- 2 slices sourdough bread
For an extra-crisp crust, spread a thin layer over the butter...
- 1 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
Assemble
Turn the bread butter side down and layer between the slices...
- 1 slice gruyère cheese
- 1 slice mild cheddar cheese
- 1 slice provolone cheese
Add another slice of any of the cheeses if needed to cover the bread.
Grill
Grill the sandwich in a skillet over medium-low heat. When the first side starts to brown, after 1–2 minutes, flip and repeat.
Once both sides are browning, keep flipping every 30 seconds so the bread doesn't get too dark while the cheese finishes melting.
Remove from the heat, slice diagonally and serve.
