Prepare Béchamel sauce as directed in previous recipe.
Pre-heat oven to 425º F.
This first step is optional, but results in a crispier sandwich that is easier to eat: Butter two slices of white bread and sprinkle with garlic powder then toast in a frying pan until crispy on one side.
Assemble sandwich on a baking sheet from the bottom up, starting with...
- 1 slice white bread
- 1/8 cup Béchamel sauce
- 3-4 thin slices of ham
- 1/4 cup shredded gruyere
- 1/8 cup Béchamel sauce
- 1 slice white bread
- 1/8 cup Béchamel spread on top of sandwich
- 1/4 cup more shredded gruyere to top sandwich
Bake in oven for 5-6 minutes until cheese has melted. Turn on broiler towards the end to brown the cheese on top.
Slice diagonally and enjoy!
