If you love French Onion Dip at the grocery store, this is not that. This actual french fried onion dip is sweet and salty and delicious. Serve it at your next party as a unique spin on one of the most classic potato chip dips. Give it a try!
Prep Steps
- 2 1/2 cups onions, about 2 large {do:dice}
- 4 oz cream cheese, at room temperature {do:soften}
Caramelize the Onions
In a large skillet over medium heat, stir together...
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 1/2 cups onions, diced
- 3/4 tsp kosher salt{tip:We test with Morton kosher salt. Using table salt? Use about 3/4 as much. Diamond Crystal? Use about 1 1/2 times as much.}
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Cook 5 minutes, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook 20–25 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
When the onions have cooked down to a sweet golden brown, take them off the heat and let them cool.

- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
